Lucious J. Sirmans

May 29, 1933 — December 5, 2014

Lucious J. Sirmans, 81, of Valdosta, died on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Lakeland to the late Abner & Sarah Hendley Sirmans, he had been a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Sirmans grew up in Lanier County and graduated from Lanier County High School. After high school he served a short time in the U.S. Army before returning to Lowndes County. Upon his return, he worked for about 10 years for Colonial Baking Company. He then went to work at the Paper Mill in Clyattville and began a career that would go on for 35 years before his retirement from PCA serving in the maintenance department. After his retirement, he worked for several years at the West Hill Avenue NAPA store. Mr. Sirmans was an avid musician, playing the guitar, banjo and many other instruments. He was well known playing in bands at the Watkins Music Hall for many years. He loved to fish, especially with his son and grandchildren. Mr. Sirmans was a member of Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Judge (Ret.) Ruby K. Sirmans of Valdosta, his son and daughter in law, Johnny & Suzi Sirmans of Valdosta and this three grandchildren, Noah Sirmans, Alicia Jackson & Zach Sirmans, all of Valdosta; one great grandchild, Joshua Jackson of Brooks County and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends. He is preceded in death by 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
A funeral service for Mr. Sirmans will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014 at Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Berrien County. Rev. J.W. Dukes, III, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Poplar Springs Cemetery, there at the church. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday, December 7, 2014. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery or the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org.
