Lonnie E. Sirmans, 86, of Valdosta, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on October 12, 1925 in Berrien County, GA to the late Lonnie Bud Sirmans and Pauline Smith Sirmans. Mr. Sirmans was retired from Georgia Power after working there from 1951 – 1986. While there he designed a pulse operated demand meter which controlled demand for better power rates. He received several service and recognition awards while at Georgia Power. Mr. Sirmans served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1942 he joined the army at age 17 and quickly became an acting 1st sergeant and then staff sergeant. He served on Normandy Beach, Norway, Germany and France. Mr. Sirmans was an expert marksman. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Sirmans is survived by his son and daughter in law, Danny and Tina Sirmans of Lake Park, five grandchildren, Patty Sirmans of Jackson, MS, Kristi Sirmans of Lake Park, David Barnes (Linda) and Stephen Barnes of Valdosta and Travis Fletcher of Lake Park, three great grandchildren, Abram Barnes of Valdosta, Waylon Harden of Lake Park and Alivia Barnes of Valdosta, one sister, Waunell Bell of St. Louis, MO, two brothers in law and sisters in law, John and Louise Taylor of Astor, Fl and James and Betty Hewitt of Adel and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty one years, Pearl Kate Sirmans, his son, Lonnie Michael Sirmans, his parents and several brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at eleven a. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Minister Penny Gibbs officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from six until eight p. m. Friday at the funeral home.
