LCDR Larry Lee Cupp, 82, of Valdosta passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020. He was born in Van Wert, OH on March 23, 1938 to the late Eldo Cupp and Grace Bower Cupp. Larry’s 21-year Naval career began in 1959, when he graduated from Officer Candidate School. His Aviation training began in Pensacola, Florida, and he received his Navy wings as a Naval Flight Officer in 1960. From 1961 to 1963, he was assigned to Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL. He deployed to Iceland, Bermuda, Norway, Denmark, and other European countries. In 1963, he attended Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California. Upon completion, he was assigned to Corpus Christi, Texas as a navigation training instructor. In March 1966, he was assigned to Naval Facility Adak, Alaska as the Executive Officer. In 1967, Larry was assigned to the USS Intrepid. He was deployed to ports in Scotland, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Crete. In 1974, LCDR Cupp was attached to Fleet Anti-Submarine Training Group Atlantic as an Instructor. From 1976 to 1978, Commander Cupp was assigned to Naval Oceanographic Squadron 8. He deployed to Greenland, Newfoundland, Iceland, Azores, Spain, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Diego Garcia, England, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, and Hawaii. Commander Cupp ended his Navy career as Commanding Officer of the Armed Forces Entrance and Examination Station in Jacksonville, Florida. From 1980 to 2001, the Commander was the Naval Science Instructor at Valdosta High School. He was of the Methodist Faith.

LCDR Cupp is survived by his wife Eloise Terry Cupp, of Valdosta; son Lt. Col. Ret. Brett M. Cupp (Kitty) of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Dr. Lisa Wells (Brad), of Kennesaw, GA; son Sean Cupp (Sarah) of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren William Wells (Casey), of Acworth, GA, Gregory Wells (Jenny) of Denver, CO, Jacob Wells, of Kennesaw, GA, Stefan Cupp, and Vaughn Cupp both of Richmond, VA; two great grandchildren, Emma Claire Wells, and Charlotte Wells. LCDR Cupp was preceded in death by two sons, Greg Cupp and Matthew Cupp, a sister Joan Marhenki, and a brother Richard Cupp.

A memorial service for LCDR Cupp will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2020 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Schappaugh officiating. The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. An inurnment with military honors will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
