Judith Anne Blanton

August 12, 1945 — April 22, 2020

Judith Anne Blanton, 74, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Judy was blessed with not just one, but two families. The family she was born into included her mother, Anne Schuyler Miller and her father, D.C. Blanton who both preceded her in death. She is survived by two brothers, Schuyler “Skeeter” Blanton, of Hahira, Georgia, and Daniel C. Blanton, Jr. of Valley, Alabama.

The family she became a part of was that of Carl L. and Wilma Slocum Wilkerson of Valdosta, both of whom preceded her in death. Carl and Wilma’s daughter, Carla, and her family loved and cared for Judy like she was one of their own. She will be missed by Carla and David Lunceford, their children Nikki (Tim) Hilgert of Alexandria, Virginia and Kevin (Kelly) Lunceford of Valdosta, along with grandchildren Elise and Ian Hilgert.

After graduating from Valdosta High School, Judy received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Valdosta State College. Judy began her career in social work at DFCS in Thomasville, Georgia, where she also enjoyed a side gig as a disc jockey. Her social work career included many years at South Georgia Medical Center and ended with her serving the State of Georgia as a disability adjudicator for the Department of Labor. Many of her colleagues became good and loyal friends over the years.

Judy was a voracious reader and continued learning throughout her life. She loved the many cats she had over the years, especially “Frumpy”. She loved Beach trips spent with family and friends celebrating life, but most of all, she loved spending time with Nikki and Kevin as they grew up. They always referred to her as “our Judy” and she loved that more than anything.

Another place she enjoyed spending time was The Order of Saint Helena Convent in North Augusta, South Carolina. Their mission is “show forth Christ through a life of monastic prayer, hospitality, and service.” This motto describes Judy to a tee, with a huge dose of humor added. Judy had a sense of humor second to none. As a dear friend put it, “no one possessed a quicker wit than Judy.” She could make you laugh until you cried and you always came away lighter and full of joy just from being around her.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing/loving Judy has had a much more enriched and blessed life. Judy was a beautiful soul who will be missed by many.

There will be no formal service honoring Judy at this time. After a time for grieving and when this pandemic is over, we will gather together and celebrate Judy, remembering her as she was before dementia took her from us. We are going to laugh joyfully and tell beautiful Judy stories. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or to St. Jude in Judy’s memory. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane.
