Juanita B. Ray

Juanita B. Ray, 87, of Valdosta, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Heritage House Nursing Home after a short illness.

She was born February 17, 1924 in Berrien County, a daughter of the late Thomas Clayton and Mary McGill Bennett. Mrs. Ray was a member of Bemiss Road Baptist Church and attended the Senior Adult Sunday School. For many years she was employed at Belk in the Ladies' Ready-to-Wear Department before working as Manager at Fashions Direct, where she later retired.

Mrs. Ray is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Doni Ray of Valdosta; two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley R. Hughes of Leesburg, and Monie and Luther Bass of Colquitt; four grandchildren, Greg and wife Barbara Hughes of Leesburg, Holly and husband Cory Thomas of Colquitt, Hannah and husband Lee Wetherington of Hahira, and Rebekah and husband John Martin of Valdosta; nine great-grandchildren, Heather and Mary Hughes, Sydney and Judson Thomas, Ethan and Liam Wetherington, Abby Harrington, Madeline and Ellie Ann Martin, and she was anticipating the birth of her tenth great-grandchild in June; one sister, Edna B. Sims of Destin, FL; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Charlie Ray; one son, Gerald Don Ray; one son-in-law, Lavon Hughes; one brother, Edward Bennett; and one sister, Victoria Spurlock Coppage.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ray will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011 in the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Cory Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Cemetery, Berrien County. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the funeral service.
