Joseph (Joe) Alvin Gore

August 29, 1939 — February 1, 2008

Dr. Joseph Alvin Gore, 72, of Valdosta, Georgia died Friday, February 1, 2008 in Atlanta, aboard a plane that was to take him and his wife Jane to another ski adventure in Montana.

Joe Gore was born in Huntington, West Virginia on August 29, 1935 to the late Edgar and Neva Gore. He enjoyed his youth in Evansville, Indiana, where he graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School.

Dr. Gore is survived by his beloved wife of more than 48 years, Jane Ruth Thomas Gore: they were married August 29, 1959. Other survivors are their daughter and son in law, Joann Lea Gore and Vincent Capece of Tallahassee, Fla.; son and daughter in law, Jeffery Thomas and Rhonda Gore of Cherry Lake, Fla; son, Joseph William Gore of Clinton, Louisiana, six grandchildren, Vincent (Sonny) Capece, III; Hannah Jane Capece; Joseph Wyatt Capece; Kendal Leigh Wilson, Jadyn Grace Gore; Carter Alexis Gore; one sister and brother in law, Nancy and Mac Fehsenfeld of Zionsville, Indiana; sister in law, Joyce Thomas Oehler of Brazil, Indiana; a brother in law and sister in law, Joe and Delores Thomas of Brazil, Indiana; many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Gore was charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Valdosta and an active leader in its varied ministries. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity, a member of the board of ACTO (Alzheimer's Caregivers' Time Out), a Red Cross disaster volunteer, a Salvation Army Bellringers coordinator, an active volunter in the Break Bread Together Program, and a member of the Elks and Kiwanis Clubs of Valdosta. He especially enjoyed his family, fishing, traveling, woodworking, sprots, especially Blazer athletics, and sharing his gardening skills with his friends.

Joe Gore graduated with a bachelor of science degree form Indiana State University, a master of science degree from the University of Tennessee, and a doctoral degree from the University of Georgia, He taught mathematics at a junior high and senior high school in Plainfield, Indiana; University of Tennessee in Knoxville; Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania; University of Georgia and Valdosta State University, where he retired in 1990. Later he was a visiting professor of mathematics at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and Montana State University in Bozeman.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
