Joe L. Roberts

Joe L. Roberts, 83, of Lake Park, died at his home on Thursday, October 22, 2009. Born in Lowndes County on August 6, 1926, Mr. Roberts was the son of the late Jewell L. and Julia Mae McDuffie Roberts. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII serving on the USS Wisconsin in the Atlantic and the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Roberts was a Locomotive Engineer for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 44 years. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church. For over 50 years he was a Mason and a member of the American Legion Post # 13. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, Honorary Member of the United Transportation Union, a Mason for over 50 years and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are a daughter, Barbara R. Mercer of Valdosta, sons, Bob and Patricia Roberts of Naylor, Bruce and Elaine Roberts of Lake Park; grandchildren, John Roberts, Brian Roberts, Matt and Holle Roberts, Keith and Kelly Mercer, Keri and Graham Zipperer, Timmy and Krystal Hiers, Kevin and Tammy Hollis, ten great grandchildren; sister, Lucille Conkle of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, brothers, Eugene E. Roberts and Thomas A. Roberts.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend A. M. Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Military Honors.
