Joe L. Lee, Jr.

Joe L. Lee, Jr., 84, of Valdosta died on Friday, March 31, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on September 2, 1921 in Soperton, GA to the late Joe L. Lee, Sr. and Hattie Wilson Lee.
At an early age his family moved to Cordele where he attended public schools and was a graduate of Georgia Military College. He entered Military service with the Cordele Unit of the National Guard when it mobilized on September 16, 1940. He served in the Infantry as a ground officer in the Air Corps and as an Army Air Force Pilot. Lee and his family moved to Valdosta in 1949 where he founded Lee Office Equipment Co. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of Valdosta Elks Lodge having served as Exalted Ruler, District Deputy Guard Exalted Ruler, and President of Georgia Elks Association and as a Director of Elks Aidmore Hospital. He was an active supporter of Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce and Moody AFB. In early 1965 the chamber decided to sponsor the Red Carpet Committee and asked Lee to chair and help reorganize and implement this important function. The first welcoming party was held in April 1965 and since that time several thousand newcomers to Moody have been welcomed to South Georgia and Southern Hospitality. He later served as Chamber of Commerce President and many Chamber committees. He served on the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority for many years and worked diligently to improve the economic development of this area.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Corbett Lee of Valdosta, one daughter, Brenda Lee Barclay of Jacksonville, Fla., one son and daughter in law, Hank and Claire Lee of Valdosta, three grandchildren, Dr. Jeff and Gretchen Lee of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jodi Barclay Tygrest of Jacksonville, Fla., Anna Claire Lee of Valdosta, three great grandchildren, Madlyn Lee, Cole Lee and Tucker Lee all of Salt Lake City, UT., one sister and brother in law, Ann Lee and Tom Dixon of Coral Gables, Fla., a half brother and his wife, James Russell Lee and Linda Lee of Hawkinsville, a number of nieces and nephews, one stepdaughter and stepson in law, Toni and Scott Ferrell of McKinney, TX., three stepsons and stepdaughters in law, Steve and Susan Corbett of Henderson, NV., Rick and Bridget Corbett of Valdosta, Ron and Kathy Corbett of Lake Park, 8-stepgrandchildren, Scott Corbett and Jake Corbett both of Lake Park, Brandon Corbett and Christopher Corbett both of Valdosta, Robert Corbett and Rachel Corbett both of Henderson, NV., Josh Ferrell and Katie Ferrell both of McKinney, TX., three step great grandchildren, Danny Corbett, Walker Corbett and Bradon Corbett all of Lake Park. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel Starr Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Monday, April 3, 2006 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Mason, Jr. and Rev. Mike McAfee officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
