Joan Charlton Scoggins

April 22, 1935 — August 19, 2014

Joan Isobel Charlton Scoggins passed away quietly at her home on Tuesday, August 19th. Col. Joan Scoggins (Ret) had a distinguished 20-year career as an Air Force Officer in the medical field serving in locations around the world. After retiring at Moody Air Force Base, she continued as a Nurse Practioner serving at the Lowdnes County Health Department, the American Red Cross, and the Partnership Health Center.
During her military service, Col. Joan Scoggins, (Ret.) was awarded multiple commendations including the Bronze Star. She was active in the Eastern Star, named Woman of the Year by the Valdosta Jr. Women's Club and was named a Community Champion by the Valdosta Times. She had a deep commitment to the community as evidenced by her extensive volunteer work. She was active in many ministries at Park Avenue Methodist Church, American Diabetes Association, The Red Cross, The Partnership Health Center, and the Weekend Snack Pack program at local public schools. There were many other charities, individuals, and organizations that benefited from Joan's contributions too numerous to mention.
Joan is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Lt. Col. Jack B. Scoggins (Ret). She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Charlton and sister of the late Barbara Toro. She is survived by her brother, Jim Charlton (and his wife, Isobel) as well as several nieces and nephews including Scott Charlton, Heather Sumner, Carla Toro and Chris Toro-Leonard. She will also be deeply missed by her stepchildren, Greg Scoggins (and his wife, Carol) and Julie Scoggins Olsen. Her loving grandchildren include Mason & Paige Scoggins, and Jessica & Lauren Olsen.
A celebration of Joan's life will be on Saturday, September 20th at Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Visitation is scheduled for 9:30 am and a Celebration of Life at 10:30 am at Park Avenue United Methodist Church with a military ceremony to follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
