Jane Twitty Shelton

October 27, 1917 — December 12, 2015

Jane Twitty Shelton, 98, of Valdosta died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Langdale Hospice House. She was born in Valdosta on October 27, 1917 to the late Willie Frank and Ora Celeste Wood Twitty and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She grew up in Valdosta, went to school with Tom D. Shelton, and married in 1944 when Mr. Shelton returned from the Pacific during World War II. They were married for 49 years until his death in 1993. Mrs. Shelton was an honor graduate of Valdosta High School in 1934. She attended Georgia State Women's College (Valdosta State University). She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Alabama in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She later achieved a Master of Arts Degree from Valdosta State College in 1969. Mrs. Shelton began teaching in 1965 at Valdosta State College in the History Department and retired in 1988. She researched the early history of Lowndes County and published this work as "Pines and Pioneers" in 1976.
Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Jan and Norman Danis of Bethesda, MD; two sons and daughters in law, Davy and Susan Shelton, Richard and Sara Jane Shelton all of Valdosta; her grandchildren, John and Alexis Danis of Cabin John, MD, Tom Danis and Brenna Folkman of Rockville, MD, Chris Danis and Michael Rizzo of Silver Spring, MD, Laura Celeste Shelton of Atlanta, Tom D. Shelton, III of Atlanta, Kelly Shelton and Jeff Sticha of Albuquerque, NM, Dayne and Susan Shelton of Tallahassee, FL, Emily Shelton and Bill Grau of Minneapolis, MN, Sally Shelton and Tim Ensor of Decatur; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Monday, December 14, 2015 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Diane Shedd officiating. A private committal will be held at the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
