HELGA EMMA BLACK, 77, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was born on May 18, 1931 in Frankfurt, Germany, a daughter of Johann and Regina Albert.

Following World War II, she attended business school and was employed as a legal secretary until she met her future husband, J.W. Black. Following their marriage in 1952, she left Germany and accompanied J.W. on assignments to Florida, Germany, Texas, South Carolina and finally Valdosta, GA, where he retired from Moody AFB in 1975. She was employed by Gilberg Fabrics until 1987. Helga enjoyed a wide circle of friends with whom she had monthly coffees and frequently traveled. Intensely competitive, she enjoyed playing table games, particularly cards and scrabble.

Mrs. Black is survived by her son, John W. Black and wife Kris Black of Langbroich, Germany; three grandchildren, Madeline Black of Stillwater, OK, Elisabeth Black of Norman, OK, and Aaron Black of Langbroich, Germany; one sister, Gisela Roehrig and her husband Sigi of Hainberg, Germany, and their daughter Sonja Castro, of Daytona Beach, FL; one brother, Gunther Albert, his wife Brigitte, and their daughter Heike, all of Frankfurt, Germany; and several beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, J.W. Black in 1987.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Father Dan O'Connell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens.
