Harold George

January 29, 1925 — January 3, 2020

Harold George, 94, of Valdosta, Lake Park, and points south, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020, at Langdale Hospice House. He is survived by his wife of more than 70 years, Elizabeth Ann (nee Sinclair) George; his daughter, Elizabeth George Clanton, and her husband, Eric Clanton; his son, Wade Sinclair George; his son, Daniel Clark George, and his two grandsons, Christopher Sinclair George and Thomas James George; a nephew and niece, two grandnieces, a grandnephew, and even two great-grandnephews.

Born Samuel Harold George on January 29, 1925, in Williston, Florida, to Samuel Helvenston George and Eula Webb George, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister. He graduated from Williston High School and Florida Southern College, and served in the Army in World War II, during which he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He served over 27 years with the Florida Parole & Probation Commission, working and living predominantly in Marion, Polk, and Hillsborough Counties, culminating in a position as Regional Administrator in Tampa. Along the way, he also served as President of the Southern States Correctional Association, President of the Bartow, Florida Kiwanis Club, and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Florida. He was an Elder and Clerk of the Session at First Presbyterian Church in Bartow, as well as serving as an Elder at Palma Ceia Presbyterian in Tampa. Harold and Betty Ann remained in Tampa for a few years after retirement before moving to Lake Park, Georgia, in 1989. They became active members of First Presbyterian Church in Valdosta.

Harold had a great sense of humor and loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, working in the yard, and cheering for the Florida Gators.

A family celebration of Harold’s life was held at Valdosta First Presbyterian Church on Monday, January 6th with Dr. Glenda Hollingshead officiating. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all of the staff members, nurses, and caregivers at Langdale Place, The Palms at Langdale, and at Langdale Hospice House, for their dedication and unending compassion.
