Frances Sumner Copeland, 82, of Valdosta died Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Lake Haven Nursing Home. She was born on September 25, 1932 in Adel, GA to the late George Ivey Sumner and Minnie Turner Sumner. Mrs. Copeland graduated from Sparks-Adel High School with honors as the Salutatorian. Soon after high school she met and married the late Albert Dewey Copeland and they were married for 59 years prior to his death in 2010. After her three children were grown she started working at the Lowndes Middle School lunchroom and eventually became the manager. She retired from the Lowndes County Schools in 1994 and then worked for several more years at the Georgia Christian School lunchroom. She was a member of Central Church of Christ. Mrs. Copeland was an excellent cook and a simple, quiet woman who doted on her husband and loved her family.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Beth Greene and Danny Ray of Valdosta; two sons and daughters in law, Albert D. and Jennifer Copeland and Glenn and Vickie Copeland, of Valdosta; nine grandchildren, Shannon and Anna Copeland of Atlanta, Chris & Darby Copeland of Charlotte, NC, Grayson Copeland, Zachary & Sara Greene of Springfield VA, Tyler and Elizabeth Greene, Adam Greene, Tessa & D. C. Carder, Garrett & Emily Copeland and Nickolas & Wendy Copeland, all of Valdosta. Also surviving are sixteen great grandchildren, a sister in law, Doris Sumner of Adel, two brothers in law and sisters in law, Richard and Lynette Shepherd of Bella Vista, AR, John and Lynda Buckholts of Forest Park, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Copeland is preceded in death by her husband, four sisters and two brothers.
A funeral service for Mrs. Copeland will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. G. R. Holton and Mr. Bryan Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Raintree Village Children's Home, 3757 Johnston Road, Valdosta, GA 31601.
