Eugene E. (Gene) Cohen

November 1, 1917 — October 2, 2010

Eugene E. (Gene) Cohen, passed away on October 2, 2010 at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta, Georgia. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on November 1, 1917. He is survived by his daughters, Marghy (Joe) Smothers, Anne (Larry) Morts of Valdosta, grandchildren, Justin (Lee Mayhew) Smothers of Valdosta and Lee W. Smothers of Savannah, a brother, Don (Jean) Cohen of Bonita Springs, Florida. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lee Woodard, his son, William, and parents, LeRoy and Ann Cohen.

During World War II, he was drafted into the Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Major. Gene graduated from the University of Miami with BBA and MBA degrees and he took further graduate work at the University of North Carolina and Wayne State University. He then worked at the University of Miami as Vice-President and Treasurer. Upon retirement from the University of Miami, he then went to work as Vice-President and CFO of Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Miami for 10 years, finally retiring in 1990.

While living in Miami, Gene was active on many community boards, which included serving as President of the Orange Bowl Committee, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Miami, Friends of the University Library and the Chamber of Commerce.
