Edwin Walker Powell

Edwin Walker Powell, 85 of Valdosta, died on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born in Louisville, KY and a graduate of Louisville Male High School, Mr. Powell enjoyed participating in many different sports in his younger years. He went on to graduate with a degree and several certifications in Physical Therapy from NYU and UCLA. He then began a career in Physical Therapy that spanned 45 years and lead him to Valdosta where he became the first physical therapist in the area. Mr. Powell was a member of the Valdosta Rotary Club where in the early 70's he originated the Crash Program to assist stranded motorist, which later on became the Travelers Assistance Program, he was a life member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Valdosta Country Club. He also originated the ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out), he was an avid collector of Indian Artifacts and history and loved fishing with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Jennifer Powell of Valdosta, a daughter and son in law, Nancy & Rob Savage of Louisville, KY, a son Douglas Powell of Louisville, KY and a daughter and son in law, Kathryn & Douglas Johnson of Bloomington, IN; a granddaughter Carrie Ann McLeod of Louisville, KY; a brother in law, Stanley (Martha) Bair of Houston, TX and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a son Daniel Buntain Powell.

Funeral services for Mr. Powell will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Frank Q. Smith will officiate. The interment of the cremains will occur at Florida National Cemetery at a later time. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, Monday February 7, 2011 from 5 until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pearlman Cancer Center, 2510 N.
