Edris Marie Phillips Becton

EDRIS MARIE PHILLIPS BECTON, 82, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, August 3, 2009, at Langdale Hospice House after a long illness.

She was born April 4, 1927 in Echols County, a daughter of the late Clarence and Donna Peterson Phillips. As a teenager she moved to Lowndes County, and on November 10, 1944 she was united in marriage with James Dorsey Becton. For many years Mrs. Becton was a cafeteria worker at Clyattville Elementary School. She was a member of Redland Baptist Church. She was a very loving and giving person, and in her later years was a caregiver to many people in the area until her own health declined. Mrs. Becton loved her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed fishing and yard work.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Moxley and Julia Pearce, both of Valdosta; three sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert (Brother) and Ann Becton of Moultrie, Mitchell and Wendy Becton of Loganville, and Hayward and Cynthia Becton of Tifton; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Coody of Pinetta, FL; a step-brother, Paul Hayes, Jr. and his wife Mildred of Norcross; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband; a son, Earl Becton; her step-mother, Lois Southall Phillips; a sister, Marjorie Easler; and two brothers, Clarence Phillips, Jr. and Preston Phillips.

Graveside services for Mrs. Becton will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at Redland Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jay Watkins and Rev. Tommy Bussey officiating. Her family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Langdale Hospice House, P.O.
