Earl N. Blocker

Earl Blocker, age 88 of Valdosta, Georgia died at his home on October 6, 2013 after a battle with cancer. He was born in the Midway Community of Glennville, Georgia and was the son of the late William Clanton Blocker and Sinnie Waters Blocker.
Mr. Blocker was a proud resident of Valdosta for over 50 years.

Mr. Blocker was a 1943 graduate of Glennville High School. After a distinguished military career, he attended the University of Georgia and Southern Technical University graduating with a Degree in Engineering. After college, Mr. Blocker was employed by Thompson Industries/ITT in Valdosta for eighteen years. He then entered the insurance industry and retired as an insurance broker in 1984. Mr. Blocker later worked with Reames & Son Construction Company for numerous years until his final retirement. He loved to fish and had a special passion for football of any kind from the youth leagues to pro leagues with a keen zest for the Valdosta High Wildcats and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Mr. Blocker was a proud United States Navy combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served in the European theater during World War II and was a D-Day survivor from the invasion of Normandy. He also served in the Pacific Theater of the War in the Battle of Okinawa during the contemplated invasion of Japan. He was "aboard ship" in Okinawa ready for battle when President Truman approved the dropping of the Atom bomb that ended World War II. Earl then entered the Navy reserves and was later recalled to active duty during the Korean War.

Mr. Blocker was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign War Post #1777, the American Legion Post #13, the Voiture Local 711, and Forty & Eight Veterans organizations all of Valdosta. He was also lifelong member of Harmony United Methodist Church in the Midway Community of Glennville Georgia. Mr. Blocker was also an active participant in the Meals on Wheels Programs in Valdosta.

Survivors include his wife Joan Reames Blocker- Valdosta, Ga. Two sons: Russell Randolph Blocker and and his wife Kim Blocker-Anchorage AK, and Maxwell Earl Blocker –Atlanta GA. Two daughters: Alice Elizabeth Kiffmeyer and her husband Edward Kiffmeyer- Jacksonville, FL. and Donna Blocker Sullivan and her husband S. Andrew Sullivan- Atlanta, GA. Grandchildren include: Ashley Marlene Blocker, Brandon Maxwell Blocker, Brittany Morgan Blocker, Maryjane Elizabeth Kiffmeyer, Cameron Vincent Kiffmeyer, Andrew Reames Sullivan and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Sullivan. He also has three surviving sisters including Ola Deloach of Glennville, GA. , Medra Purvis of Savannah, GA. and Emogene Deas of Springfield, GA. He has a surviving brother-in-law- L. Phillip Reames of Atlanta, GA and sister-in-laws Anita Reames of Valdosta, GA., and Janie Reames of Atlanta, GA as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Mr. Blocker was preceded in death by his parents noted above, his brothers- Monroe Blocker and Olan Blocker, and three of his six sisters- Ida Pearl Todd, Eula Deloach, his twin sister Edna Lanier, and seven brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws.

Services :

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta, Georgia on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 6p.m. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the Service also at Carson McLane. In addition, the body will lie in state at Harmony United Methodist Church in Glennville Georgia on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 2-3 pm with the graveside service at Harmony immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the American Legion Post #13 in Valdosta, GA. in Earl's name. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mclanecares.com.
