Dr. Jerry G. Purvis, Sr.

Dr. Jerry G. Purvis, Sr., 79, of Valdosta died Thursday, December 25, 2014 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Adel, Cook County, Georgia on October 4, 1935 to the late Guy Purvis and Ethel Gaskins Purvis. He was a member of Christ the King Episcopal Church and served in the United States Air Force as a Captain at Moody Air Force Base. Dr. Purvis attended Mercer University for three years and received early acceptance into The Medical College of Georgia. After graduation he completed his internship at Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL. He then completed one year of general surgical training at Tampa General Hospital. He completed surgical training with a dual residency in general and vascular surgery at The Medical College of Georgia. After completion of his training, he graduated from The Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Purvis served on the board at The Medical College of Georgia and as Chairman of the Hospital Authority and was very instrumental in establishing The Dasher Heart Center at South Georgia Medical Center. His current position was the Director at Health Care South. An active community leader, he gave of his time to his patients and in advancing the medical community in Valdosta.
Survivors include his wife, June White Purvis of Valdosta, his children; Juliet Elizabeth Purvis, DNP and her fiance', James Budd of Atlanta; Dr. Jerry Gaines Purvis, Jr. of Valdosta, Jenifer Purvis Hight, RN, BSN and Dr. Perry Hight of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; Joy Purvis Tharpe, RD, LD and Dr. Carter Edwin Tharpe of Macon, GA; his twelve grandchildren, Jerry Gaines Purvis, III, Kathleen Claire Purvis, Guy Winston Purvis, Mitchell McGraw Purvis, Georgia June Purvis and their mother, Kathleen Bedingfield Purvis; Juliet Barrett Hight, Perry Dennis Hight, Jr., Sophia Emily Hight, Athina Elizabeth Hight; Jacqueline Eve Tharpe, Carter Edwin Tharpe, Jr. and Scarlett Raines Tharpe; his loyal staff of forty five years, Odell Campbell, his nurse; Maggie Brown, his secretary; Rosa Lee Davis, his housekeeper and his current nurse Amanda Cornelius. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dwayne Purvis and James Purvis and a sister, Margie Norris.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, December 28, 2014 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with The Reverend Stanley White officiating. Entombment will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
