Dr. Amasa R. "Buddy" Pitts, Jr.

Dr. Amasa R., “Buddy” Pitts, Jr. of Valdosta died on December 14, 2017. He was born in Columbus, Georgia on June 25, 1930 to Mr. A.R. Pitts and Mrs. Bryd Moon Pitts.
Dr. Pitts graduated from Columbus High School, then attended Auburn University and Emory at Valdosta. He attended the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and received a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree in 1953. Dr. Pitts completed a surgical internship in 1954 at the Cleveland Foot Clinic. He served in The United States Army and was stationed at Walter Reed General Hospital from 1954 to 1956.
His first office was opened in 1956 in Valdosta and he continued his practice until June 31, 2002 when he retired. He was on the staff of Smith Hospital and South Georgia Medical Center. Dr. Pitts opened the first ambulatory surgical center in Lowndes County in 1991.
He served on the Georgia State Board of Podiatry Examiners for 15 years and was president of the Podiatry Examiners for four years. Dr. Pitts was a life member of the Georgia Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He also served as president of the Georgia Podiatric Medical Association.
Dr. Pitts was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church and served on the vestry several terms. He was a founding member of Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church and served as Senior Warden two terms.
Dr. Pitts is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Pitts. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. Pitts, three sons and daughters-in-law: Danny and Jamie Pitts, Mike and Cathy Pitts, and Tim and Angela Pitts. Additionally, survivors include grandchildren: Jenny and Josh Carroll, Mitchell Pitts, Reese and Amy Pitts, Mary Anna Pitts, Joseph Pitts, Danielle Pitts, Austin and Kaylon Coats and great grand-daughter, Libby Carroll.
A celebration of his life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Dave Johnson officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
