Clark D. Payne

CLARK D. PAYNE, 92, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009, at Langdale Hospice House after a short illness.

He was born September 30, 1916 in Tifton, a son of the late Walter and Macy Hannon Payne. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corp with the 376th Heavy Bombardment Group, Unit L-22, in Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Italy from 1942 to 1945, and later was employed at Moody Air Force Base with the Civil Service as an airplane mechanic. Mr. Payne was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the American Legion Post #13. He enjoyed being outdoors, woodworking, fishing, growing Christmas trees, and spending time with family.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Goff Payne of Valdosta, he is survived by three children, Jerry Payne and wife Susan of Columbia, SC, Joyce Payne Hunt and husband Norman of Atlanta, and Robert Walsh and wife Trudy of Vail, CO; five grandchildren, Brent Walsh and wife Joey-Michelle of Houston, TX, Norman Hunt and wife Megan of Sugar Hill, Ben Hunt of Atlanta, Brian Payne of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Julie Payne of Myrtle Beach, SC; one great-grandson, Harrison Hunt of Sugar Hill; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Felton, Tommy, and Ethridge Payne, and by four sisters, Dollie Hopkins, MaryLee Payne, Alma Jordan and Lois Hallman.

Funeral Services for Mr. Payne will be held at 12:00 pm Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Rev. Elvin East and Rev. Brian Sayre officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at 2:30 pm in Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery, Tifton. Mr. Payne�s family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
