Blanche Carter Thornton Smith

Blanche Carter Thornton Smith, 86, of Valdosta, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016, after a brief period of declining health.

She was born January 7, 1930 in Valdosta, a daughter of the late Darvin L. and Urrie Copeland Carter. She was a member of Lake Park Church of Christ; the Lord always came first in her life. For sixteen years she worked in the Cafeteria at Lake Park Elementary School and enjoyed the people she worked with and the children she served. She deeply loved her family, friends and neighbors, and enjoyed serving others, reading the Bible and ice cream. She had eighty-six years of quality life and was always joyful.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard Thornton, Jr. and Colleen of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jerry Thornton of Echols County; twelve grandchildren, Eric L. Thornton and wife Rena of Lake Park, Mandy N. Hargraves of Lake Park, Ashlie B. Thornton of Douglas, Tammy L. Mosher and husband David of Lake Butler, FL, Pamela Carter and husband Paul of Echols County, Richard Thornton of Echols County, Sharon Rodriguez and husband Pedro of Live Oak, FL, Betty Sue Taylor of Atlanta, Donnie Gray of Lakeland, Sharon Axthelm and husband Jason of Brady, NE, Mindy Walker of Jacksonville, FL, and Colt Weaver of Echols County; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Myra and Jim Kemper of Meridian, ID; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Dorothy Carter of Lake Park; a special friend and sister-in-law, Joyce Winters of Warner Robins; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard Thornton, Sr. and Douglas H. Smith; and a brother, Larry Carter.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Thornton Smith will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Lake Park Church of Christ, with Mr. Marvin Greene and Mr. Jerry Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Corinth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be gratefully accepted.
