Aubrey Saunders of Valdosta, GA passed from this life on Saturday, June 4, 2016. He was born on May 3, 1921 in Statenville, GA and was 95 years of age. Mr. Saunders was a WWII Army Veteran having served in the Po Valley in Italy and earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He told his family that one of the highlights of his life several years ago was going to Washington DC with his fellow veterans on one of the first Honor Flights from Valdosta.
Mr. Saunders spent most of his life working with lumber, as did his father. He became a lumber inspector for several years, traveling around the south until his wife put her foot down. He then went to work at The Langdale Company, where he spent the rest of his career of 36 years inspecting poles and running the lab for quality control.
He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet Goodson, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. L. L. Saunders, two brothers, John and Bill Saunders, two sisters, Jewel (Max) Smith and Nell (Frank) Towles, and son-in-law, Andrew Hagen. Mr. Saunders is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Hagen of Hiawassee, GA, Judy (Bill) Touchton of Valdosta, and Debbie (Mike) Kirby of Longwood, FL. He leaves behind his seven grandchildren; Ashley (Barbara) Touchton of Mauldin, SC, Stuart (Katie) Touchton of Greer, SC, Ken Touchton of Marietta, GA, Melanie (Andrew) Huddleston of Sydney, Australia, Kyle Kirby of Lake Mary, FL, David Hagen of Beverly Hills, CA and Laura (Troy) Thomas of Hayesville, NC. Mr Saunders is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren (one more on the way), three great-great grandchildren (one more on the way) and 2 nieces and 3 nephews.
He was active in Lee Street Baptist Church and Azalea City Baptist Church before coming to Northside Baptist Church, where he served in many roles over the years. In recent years, he enjoyed volunteering at The Mailbox Club and calling church members to wish them a happy birthday. Mr. Saunders spent his last few months at the Fellowship Home with their caring and loving staff. He was also cared for by Halcyon Hospice and their wonderful staff. Mr. Saunders loved the Lord, spent time reading his Bible and praying for his family and nation daily.
The service for Mr. Saunders will be held in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home, Monday, June 6, 2016 at two p. m. with Reverend Bob Willis and Dr. Robbie Foster officiating.
