Anita Hatcher Shelton

August 22, 1921 — August 17, 2020

Anita Hatcher Shelton, 98, of Valdosta, died on Monday, August 17, 2020 at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. She was born on August 22, 1921 in Dothan, Alabama to the late Thomas Eifel (T.E.) Hatcher and Hettye Lee Kirkland Hatcher. Mrs. Hatcher attended the Georgia Women’s College upon graduating high school and later married George Lang Shelton, Jr. She attended Lee Street Baptist Church where she taught the four-year old Sunday school class for many years. She was a member of the Lowndes County Historical Society and was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees. Mrs. Shelton was also a long-time board member of Friends of the Library for South Georgia Regional Library and a volunteer for the Turner Art Center. She was a member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn Shelton, and Claire and Hank Lee all of Valdosta; her grandchildren and their spouses, Anna Lee of Valdosta, Bill and Rebecca Parramore of Statenville, Todd and Deidre Parramore of Valdosta, Laurie and John Duane of Charleston, South Carolina, David, Jr., and Ashley Drumheller of Pope, Mississippi, Robert Daugharty of Valdosta, George and Rebecca Daugharty of New Market, Virginia, and Jonathan Allen of Tampa, Florida; 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Gene Hatcher of San Luis Obispo, California; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Lang Shelton, Jr.; her daughter, Becky Allen; siblings, Nelle Curtright, Charles Hatcher, Paul Hatcher, Martha Ellen Grudzien, David Hatcher, Robert Hatcher, Emory Hatcher, Bettye Nichols, and Jack Hatcher.
A private family service for Mrs. Anita Hatcher Shelton will be held on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church with Rev. John Chick officiating. Following the service, the public is invited to attend the committal service at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lowndes County Historical Society at P.O.
