Amelia Thornton Johnson

Amelia Thornton Johnson, 93, departed this life Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at The Presbyterian Home in Quitman, GA. She was born on December 27, 1920 in Assumption Parish, Louisiana. Her Parents were the late Mima Williams Thornton and the late Joseph Thornton. Her Biological father was the late Reverend James J. Antoine. Amelia attended New Orleans Public School and later answered her calling and found her passion in Nursing. She was baptized Baptist, later converted to Catholicism and became a member of The John Evangelist Catholic Church located in Valdosta, GA. Amelia was a retired Nurse and active member of NARFE, Chapter 1044. She was married to the late Welton Daggs. Of this union her five children were born: two sons, Wellington Daggs who passed away a month after birth, and Alton Daggs, Sr. of Valdosta, GA; three daughters, Delores Daggs Page of New Orleans, LA, Shirley Daggs Bellazain of Richmond, CA, and Audrey Daggs Mitchell of Elkhart, IN.

Amelia met and married the late Wendell Johnson in California. They both retired, moved to Elkhart, IN and eventually ventured to Valdosta, GA. Survivors include: one brother-in-law, Arthur Johnson; four children; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Thornton; her sister, Mary Antoine; two sisters-in-law, Emmeline (Thornton) Thomas and Elizabeth Johnson; three sons-in-law, Paul Bellazain, James Mitchell and Alfred J. Page; daughter-in-law, Vidella B. Daggs; and a great-grandson, Floyd Jackson III.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Christopher Ortega officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the Carson McLane Funeral Home with visitation to follow.
