Alexander M. "Buddy" Culbreth, Jr.

Alexander M. "Buddy" Culbreth, Jr., 88, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in TyTy, GA on September 3, 1928 to the late Alexander Sr. and Ellen Glenn Prescott Culbreth. Buddy and his family moved to Valdosta from TyTy when he was ten years old, where he attended Lelia Ellis School and went on to graduate from Valdosta High School. While at VHS, he played quarterback and kicker for the Wildcats under Coach Wright Bazemore and was later inducted into the Valdosta High School Sports Hall of Fame. Following high school graduation, he attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL. After optometry college, he served in the United States Air Force as a staff optometry officer before returning to Georgia to begin his optometry career. He also played semi-professional baseball. He worked in private practice for 64 years.

Dr. Culbreth was active in the Lion's Club, the Boy's and Girl's Club of Valdosta, the South Georgia Emmaus Community, First Methodist Church of Valdosta, and was a past board member of the Valdosta Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years , Mary L. Culbreth of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Lex (Donna) Culbreth of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law: Kay (Chuck) Waters and Lang (Charlie) Fiveash all of Atlanta; his grandchildren: Mills and Max Culbreth of Valdosta, Sarah and Lauren Waters, and Carter, Allison, and John Fiveash, all of Atlanta; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Ty Fender of Fort Pierce, and Tootsie (Bubber) Tillman of Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Alexander M. "Buddy" Culbreth will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Bob Moon officiating. The burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family received friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Georgia Emmaus Community, P.O.
