Aleta Corley

July 1, 1927 — August 23, 2013

Aleta Corley, 86, of Valdosta, died on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Heritage House Nursing Home. Aleta was born on July 1, 1927, at Little Griffin Hospital in Valdosta. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Webb Corley and Velma Lawrence Corley. After graduating Valdosta High School in 1944, Aleta joined the Cadet Nurse Corp and studied at Emory University and Bellevue Hospital in New York City. She attended UCLA in California and later graduated Cum Laude from Valdosta State College.
Aleta worked at the State Department passport division in Washington, D.C., Moody Air Force Base and the Federal Reserve Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah. Because of her high intellect, although she did not have the required college degree in English, she worked as a Technical Proofreader for Howard Hughes Corp. in Los Angeles with a high priority security clearance while the company was working on the Apollo Space Project. She retired from First National Bank in Valdosta as Director of Marketing where her imaginative and creative talents were used in designing newspaper ads and sales promotion projects, even composing the music and lyrics to a jingle for one of the ads. Aleta was an avid bridge player and member of Mensa, Readers Forum, FFV, the American University of Women and Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Wiggins of Valdosta; nieces, Rebecca Padgett of Albany, Penelope Wiggins of Orlando, Florida, Susan Wells and Robert Wells of Salem, Alabama; and a nephew, Charles Wiggins, Jr. of Valdosta; grand nieces and nephews, Clint Elliott, Lawrence Wiggins , George Padgett, Lane Wells, Whitney Wiggins, Sydney Grace Wiggins and Charles Wiggins, III; great nephews, Jackson and Jonathan Wiggins and Steven and Jaromey Cannady, Kaden and Silas Padgett; cousins, Eugenia Simmons of Macon, Virginia and Jerry Lloyd of Forsyth, Glenn Lawrence, Jr. Anita Kellerhouse, and Ken Lawrence of Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Lois Corley.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 o'clock p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Christ Episcopal Church followed by visitation with the family at the church. The Rev. Tar Drazdowski and The Rev. Lawrence Wiggins will officiate. A committal service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013, at 11:00 o'clock a.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
