Brother William (Bill) Royce McCurdy, Sr., 78, of Lake Park, died at his home on Monday, February 17, 2014. Born in Irwinville, Georgia to the late Bob and Mildred (King) McCurdy, he attended school and graduated from high school in Irwinville. He went on to continue his education at Valdosta State College and Luther Rice Seminary. Mr. McCurdy served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was a Mason. He owned Studstill Lumber in Madison, Florida for many years and also was the owner of Southside Hardware in Valdosta.
Brother McCurdy was a member of Sardis Baptist Church in Echols County, serving as Sunday school teacher and deacon. Later on he pastored Sardis and Macedonia Baptist in Echols County and served as associate pastor of Valley Haven Baptist Church in Banner Elk, North Carolina for several years.
Survivors are his wife, Jeanette George McCurdy of Lake Park; daughters, Cindy McCurdy Monk of Symrna, Georgia, Cathy and Joe Guzay of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; son, Bill, Jr. and Brenda Weaver McCurdy of Lake Park; six grandchildren, Richard and Barbara Braswell, Wes and Heather Guzay Pounders, Eric and Michelle Guzay Howard, Brett Guzay, Blake and Kayla Jackson McCurdy and Danielle McCurdy; five great grandchildren, Kayla Braswell, Riley Braswell, Jax Pounders, Emmie Howard and Ryder Leo McCurdy; sister, Evelyn Hiers of Echols County and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. Reverend Garvie Nichols, Reverend James Young, and Reverend Mickey Corbett will officiate. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home.
