Raymond Ellis Wilson, 82, of Lake Park died Monday, April 17, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Lowndes County on May 14, 1934 he was the son of the late Herbert and Florence Irene Godwin Wilson. A lifelong resident of this area, Mr. Wilson was a United States Navy Veteran. He was a retired Sports Odds Specialist who never met a stranger and was loved by many people of all ages and walks of life. Generous, kind and warmhearted, he was quick witted with a unique sense of humor, qualities that gifted his avid story telling. Mr. Wilson enjoyed fishing, playing golf and watching sports. He was a scholar of crossword puzzles, and he never passed up a good game of cards. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Park.
Survivors include his daughters and sons in law, Beth and Billy Danforth, Suzanne and Thomas Coker all of Valdosta, Kim and Bobby Walther of Lake Park, Mona and Skip Mounts of St. Simons Island, Naomi Earls of Idaho; his son, Scotty Wilson of Lake Park; his grandchildren and their spouses, Bert Dowling, Garrett and Brooke Dowling, Kenny, Jr. and Lauren Brady, Ray Brady and Arleta Jenkins, Rae Danforth, Austin Wilson, Christy and Greg Grosch, Lindsey and Ricky Hollstein, Anthony, Alan, and Eric Pilkinton and many great grandchildren; his sister and brother in law, Willa Mae and Charles Merriss of Whittier, CA; a dear, lifelong friend of sixty plus years, Ken Ferrell of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Ann Wilson, a son, Raymond Ellis Wilson, Jr., a stepdaughter, Sheree Blanchard and a sister, Myrtis Wilson Sutton.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Robbie Harrington will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
