Lt. Col. Joe Burwell Stallings

April 19, 1934 — February 20, 2018

Lt. Col. Joe Burwell Stallings, age 83, of Jennings, FL, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at Shands in Gainesville, FL. Joe was born April 19, 1934, in Berrien County, Georgia to the late Roscoe Arnold and Sarah Frances Brown Stallings. After growing up on a tobacco farm in Nashville, Joe attended Emory University where he received a Bachelor of arts in geology. After college he married the love of his life, Ann Ware. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1977. During this time, he was stationed in Europe, served in the Vietnam War, and worked in the Pentagon. While in the Air Force, Joe enjoyed teaching future pilots to fly as well. He loved flying so much that when he retired, he dedicated his time to Angel Flights on his Piper Seneca plane. He was a proud member of the Daedalians and he served as County Commissioner for Berrien County from 1985-1989.
Joe was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Ann Ware Stallings, and a brother, Paul Thomas Stallings. He is survived by his son Joe Burwell Stallings Jr. (Anna Patterson) of Auburn, GA; granddaughter Summer Stallings Redmon (Scott), grandson Joseph Stallings; a daughter Frances Stallings Hunter (Steven) of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters Stephanye Hunter and Emma Hunter Chorneau (Nicholas), and grandson William Hunter; sister Jane Stallings Knight; sister- in-law Caroline Robinson Stallings; and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service for Lt. Col. Joe Burwell Stallings will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 2:00 pm at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens in Valdosta, with Rev. John McGowan officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in honor of Lt. Col. Stallings to Angel Flight Soars, 2000 Airport Rd, Ste. 227, Dekalb Peachtree Airport (PDK) Atlanta, GA 30341, Angelflightsoars.org.
