Dr. Sam Coker

January 27, 1930 — October 12, 2017

Dr. Sam Coker passed away peacefully on October 12, 2017. He was born in Atlanta, Ga on January 27, 1930. Dr. Coker was a graduate of Young Harris College where he met the love of his life, Gene Allison. They were married 55 wonderful years. He also graduated from the Candler School of Theology of Emory University. During his 50 years as a Methodist minister, he served many churches in the North Georgia Conference. His television ministry of Grace United Methodist touched many lives. He traveled the nation as a motivational speaker and led several trips to the Holy Land, where he baptized many in the Jordan River. He served on several boards and agencies, including the Young Harris Board of Trustees.
Dr. Coker was preceded in death by his wife, Gene Coker; his parents, John and Edith Coker; and his sister, Gilda Coker. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Hutchinson of Valdosta, Ga and Cathy Brewer of Ponte Vedra, Fla, 7 grandchildren, Catherine and Nic Daugharty of Valdosta, Ga; Leigh and Lake Jordan of Valdosta, Ga; Caroline and Charlie Dorminy of Saint Simons Island, Ga; Allison and Beau Allen of Atlanta, Ga; Mary Sheats of Atlanta, Ga; Cristie and Evan Sussenbach of Columbus, Ga; and Cassie and Oby Brewer of Chattanooga, Tn, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A family memorial was held Saturday, October 14 with Dr. Bob Moon officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Coker’s memory may be made to Valdosta First United Methodist Church and Young Harris College. We are confident God looked into Papa’s face on Thursday afternoon and said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23.
