Dr. Gary Carter, 67, of Lake Park, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 following a brief illness. Born in Valdosta on February 27, 1951, he was the son of the late James Calvin “Sprig” Carter and the late Mamie Frances Brown Carter. Gary attended Lowndes High School where he was in the first graduating class of the new high school on Norman drive, star quarterback for the Vikings and Homecoming King. He attended Valdosta State College from 1969-1972, and continued his education at the Medical College of Georgia, where he received his Medical Degree in 3 years. He married Pamela Ann Warkentin on December 14, 1976, in Charlottesville, VA where she finished her medical school training to receive her M.D. Dr. Carter and his wife, Dr. Pamela Carter practiced in-patient psychiatry together during their careers. He was one of only 893 psychiatrist in the United States to be Board Certified in Forensic Psychiatry.
Dr. Carter was also an Associate Clinical Professor at Mercer University School of Medicine. He served as Georgia’s clinical director of Forensic Psychiatry at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville for the most dangerous and severely mentally ill patients for 3 years. Dr. Carter was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association.
Dr. Carter is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pamela Ann Warkentin Carter, M.D. of Lake Park, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home with Reverend Ronnie Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gideons International, www.gideons.org or P.O.
